WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO COME ON REMOTE YEAR?
Remote Year became the catalyst for a much-needed life pivot - a means to break free from 'regular programming' and combine both career and personal aspirations with the freedom of global travel. I was stuck in corporate life without a way out, and this was exactly the refreshing change I was looking for!
WHAT ARE YOU WORKING ON FOR THE YEAR?
Work Stuff: New business opportunity with some of my remotes Personal Development: Finding a way to remove bias and getting a better grip on impatience. Hobbies: Getting better at design, photography and videography
HOW DID YOU FIND YOURSELF A REMOTE ROLE?
Like many of the tech companies we work for, mine was unwilling to change the mentality of requiring employees to be physically at work despite having the technology to support remote collaboration. So through the process of unsuccessfully pitching my business case to my directors, I ended up resigning and finding some freelance work to temporarily sustain myself while on the program. Let’s see where the year takes me.
WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO OTHERS LOOKING TO BRING TRAVEL INTO THEIR LIVES?
Imagine partying with thousands of people on a fire-lit island in Thailand; riding in a classic car through the streets of Cuba; watching an insane robot show in Japan, or cliff diving in to crystal clear Jamaican waters. There are some weird, wacky, fun and incredible things to experience in this world and I couldn’t imagine living life without doing all of them! Shed your fear, take a leap of faith and go out and experience the things you’ve always dreamed of for yourself – it will truly change your world.
WHO DO YOU HOPE TO BE BY THE END OF REMOTE YEAR?
Don’t really have any thoughts on the person I want to be, but am definitely excited and curious for the retrospection at the end of the journey to see what, if anything changed! I’ll focus on living this year without regrets, trying to do as many side trips and activities as possible, and ticking off things that have long been de-prioritized on my bucket list for lack of time.
WHERE DOES YOUR PASSION FOR TRAVEL COME FROM?
We’re all on a quest for something – call it success, evolution or happiness. But how can we expect to find it without taking the time to explore and see what’s out there? Travel has opened my mind up to new sights, sounds, people and experiences like nothing else, and keeps me from stagnating in life by always providing new stimulus to learn and grow from.
WHAT IS YOUR SECRET TALENT?
OCD! I'm forever cleaning and organizing things - from creating spreadsheets to track EVERYTHING in my life from fashion, to finances and restaurant/activity reservations (I organize a lot of things!), and doing a full daily pack-and-unpack when i am on the road to optimize for each day's activities. My drunken alter-ego also cleans my apartment for me after a night out as an added bonus :)
WHAT BOOK SHOULD EVERYONE READ?
“Illusions. The Adventures of a Reluctant Messiah” – Richard Bach. Get ready to go reeeal deep and reassess what you think you know about life!
YOUR FAVORITE DIGITAL NOMAD HACK?
Before I packed for Remote Year, I made a detailed fashion spreadsheet (not kidding here!) which outlined the cities I was going to, the corresponding weather conditions for each month, what events I would need to dress for, and the space I had to play with in relation to suitcases and day bags. Based on that grid, I mapped ‘approved’ outfits and went on a 2-month mission to donate the things I didn’t need anymore and purchase the items that I didn’t have. I got rid of color, so everything I own is either black, grey or white – and have streamlined my clothing situation that it’s really easy to wash, travel with or replace my stuff while not looking like a bum no matter the occasion. Month 3, and the system is killing it!
3 THINGS YOU CAN'T LIVE WITHOUT ON THE ROAD?
Portable (waterproof) speaker, my Drone (yes, this is an essential), and my GoPro
