Meet Charles Du

Charles Du is an entrepreneur from the USA traveling the world with Remote Year Cousteau

Why did you decide to come on Remote Year?

I've always grown the most when I travel. I get unplugged from media influences. I experience new adventures. I gather new ideas and perspectives.

However, traveling also includes a lot of hassles. I don’t like to plan things, coordinate transportation, book lodging. Remote Year takes care of all of that. I get stable infrastructure (housing, workspace, social events) with the added growth from traveling.

Remote Year also focuses on community. They host optional events for us. They help plan side trips. They’re here when we need them and stand by the sidelines when we want to be independent.

The community makes it feel like you’re traveling with 70 of your best friends and family. We work together. We play together. We grow together.

What are you working on for the year?

I'm creating an online course that teaches other people how to become successful digital nomads. Most people want to work while traveling. But it’s hard to make the jump.

People have to figure out:

“How do I make money?”

“How do I stay productive?”

“How to I find love?”

This course will answer these questions and more. It’ll teach people to how to transition their careers and lifestyles in a strategic way.

The course will also remove some of the biggest myths in becoming a digital nomad. For example, when people think of digital nomads, they think of freelancers. Most digital nomads on Remote Year are actually full-time employees. This means that for many people who want to travel and work, they don’t need to quit their day jobs--they just need to learn how to convince their employers to let them work remotely. This course is filled with in-depth interviews with real digital nomads who have made the dream happen.

How did you find yourself a remote role?

After I decided on become a digital nomad, I did an inventory of what I’m good at, what I’m passionate about, and how I can make money remotely. The intersection of those 3 things ended up being teaching online.

Now I’m traveling the world, teaching two topics: “How to Design Better Products” through and “How to Become Successful Digital Nomads” through

What are you most passionate about?

I’m passionate about teaching. I think online education is one of the greatest inventions of our time. It makes my day when my course gets a 5-star review from a student living across the world.

What is your secret talent?

I’m a Close-up Magician. I bring a deck of cards with me when I travel. It’s my instrument.

I’ve performed at events ranging from intimate Yelp Elite parties to remote villages in the middle of the Amazon jungle.

I’m also a Magician Member at the Academy of Magical Arts at the Magic Castle in Hollywood. It’s one of the coolest places on Earth. Definitely visit if you get a chance.

Your favorite quote?

“A good traveling has no fixed plans and is not intent on arriving.” ~Lao Tse

Who do you hope to be by the end of Remote Year?

I’m hoping to inspire 10,000 people to become successful digital nomads.
