Sabrina Colella is an online business and marketing strategist from Canada traveling the world with Remote Year Magellan
Why did you decide to come on Remote Year?
I was at the peak of my corporate marketing career. By age 30 I was a Marketing Director for a large North American consumer events company. I had everything I thought I wanted - an amazing corporate career, a great employer, my awesome corporate salary, plus all the amazing perks and benefits to boot! I had reached a level of career status and success that I was proud of, but something inside me knew it was time for change. When I was presented with the opportunity to travel with Remote Year, I thought “how perfect is this!?”. Thoughts of building my own location-independent business had been on my mind for a few years, and Remote Year was the catalyst I needed to make a lifestyle change. So, I decided to take the leap, pursued my dreams of travelling around the world, and stepped into my power of becoming an entrepreneur.
What are you working on for the year?
While on Remote Year, I am dedicated to growing my online marketing & strategy business where I help ambitious female entrepreneurs launch and scale their online service-based business. I'm focused on empowering women through entrepreneurship so that they can design a life filled with passion and purpose. You can learn more at www.sabrinacolella.com.
Where have you lived/traveled to previously?
I've lived in the South of France (my French is still terrible though!). Plus, I’ve been to an insane amount of cities and have travelled to 35+ countries (and multiple times at that ... but who’s counting!?) That’s A LOT of travel points!
How did you find yourself a remote role?
The short answer is, that I didn’t. Instead, I created one for myself by starting my business! It’s been one of the best decisions I could have ever made. Starting a business has been an amazing growth opportunity and has enabled me to stretch myself in ways I didn’t think were possible.
Describe your Remote Year experience in 3 words.
Forever Life Changing
Where does your passion for travel come from?
When I was 21 I participated in a University study exchange abroad for a semester in the South of France. During that time I travelled all over Europe and truthfully, it was (and still is), one of the highlights of my life. Since then, I had a career where I travelled quite frequently as well, and my love for travel and exploration hasn't left me since.
What are you most passionate about?
I’m most passionate about mentoring, motivating and supporting women to unapologetically pursue their interests, to honour their dreams, to value their gifts and to help them see, that they are deserving and worth it.
Your favorite digital nomad hack?
Packing cubes! I can’t believe there was ever a time when I travelled without them!
Who do you hope to be by the end of Remote Year?
I hope to be a more “loving” version of myself. To be kinder and more self-aware, while maintaining an open mind and an open heart. To be even more accepting of others and what makes us unique and different. I’ve already had the pleasure of meeting this person, and I have an immense amount of gratitude to have been given that chance. My highest hope is that I will continue to learn, grow and evolve, even after I am done with Remote Year. To live fearlessly, more boldly and courageously.
What would you say to others looking to bring travel into their lives?
I would say, what’s truly stopping you? Travel and exploration is everywhere. I've learned that you don’t need to be in some exotic new place to experience the excitement and joy that comes with travelling. You can always start small if your situation doesn’t allow you to “go all in” with your travels. Begin by incorporating this into your every day life. Explore a new part of your city (or neighbouring town if you don’t live in a big city), venture off in your car for the weekend, get off at a random subway stop that you normally wouldn’t take. Travel is one of the greatest gifts we can give to ourselves (and it’s also very accessible these days!). You can design your travels however works best for you, from budget to luxury travelling. There is no one-size fits all. You don’t need to to travel for months on end, just pick a place and go already!
If you had to be stuck on an island with another Remote, who would it be and why?
Without a doubt, it would be with Dustin! Why? Because he’s incredibly resourceful. It’s likely he could build us a boat and navigate our way back to civilization AND he’d probably do it with a smile on his face! Plus, I’m pretty sure he’d keep us safe from any unwanted predators (and out smart a few), so that we didn’t starve! I would go so far as to say that he could probably tackle a wild animal with his bare hands! ;p Something tells me we would make it out a live .. or perhaps just comfortably live in a tree-house and never leave at all!
What is your secret talent?
I’m a HULA HOOPING KWWWEEN! ;p
Where are you in 30 years?
I would typically say RETIRED, but what I hope to gain from this experience is to discover a love and appreciation for inspired work and contribution that is driven by passion (that will fuel and sustain me), even when I don’t need to do it for the money.
